Type: Open-source · Research · Collaboration Stage: Early development Looking for: Collaborators & contributors 🙌
The one-liner
Project Map is an open knowledge-mapping platform that turns scattered ideas, research, and projects into a single, explorable map.
If you can say what your project does in one bold sentence, you're already ahead. That's your hook — put it right at the top.
The problem 🎯
Knowledge is everywhere and connected to nothing. Researchers, students, and creators keep their notes, papers, and links in a dozen disconnected apps — and the relationships between ideas get lost. When you can't see how things connect, you rebuild the same understanding over and over.
What it does
Project Map gives every idea a place on a shared map, and every connection a visible line:
- 🗺️ Visual maps — drop concepts, papers, and projects as nodes; link them to show how they relate.
- 🔗 Living connections — follow a thread from a single idea to the whole field around it.
- 👥 Built together — maps are collaborative, so a community's knowledge grows in one place.
- 🌍 Open by default — export, remix, and build on any public map.
How it works
A quick look under the hood — keep this part honest and simple:
| Layer | Choice |
|---|---|
| Frontend | React + a canvas library for the interactive graph |
| Backend | Node API with a graph-friendly data model |
| Data | Nodes & edges (ideas and the links between them) |
| Hosting | Self-hostable + a free public instance |

Roadmap 🛣️
- Core map editor (nodes + links)
- Public, shareable maps
- Real-time collaboration
- Import from Markdown & Zotero
- AI-assisted "suggest a connection"
What we're looking for 🤝
This is the most important section of any project post — be specific about the help you need. Vague asks get ignored; clear ones get answered.
- A frontend dev who's played with graph/canvas rendering.
- A researcher or educator to shape real-world use cases.
- A designer to make big maps feel calm, not overwhelming.
How to get involved
- ⭐ Star / follow to say "keep going."
- 💬 Comment with an idea, a question, or "I'm in."
- 🛠️ Grab a task from the roadmap and open a thread on Olii Collab.
Want to post your own project? Use this exact skeleton — one-liner → problem → what it does → how it works → roadmap → what you need → how to help — and you'll have a post people actually want to join. New here? Start with the Writing Guide. 🚀
